April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and in honor of survivors of Sexual Assault, The Safe Center will be participating in several events throughout Nassau County to raise awareness. The Safe Center will be hosting their first “DENIM DAY” on April 26th, 2017 from 12pm to 3pm. Denim Day was first started in April 1999 after a Chief Judge in the Italian Supreme Court overturned a case arguing that “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer a rape case but consensual sex.” Women began to protest by wearing jeans to work. The Safe Center will be displaying Denim Jeans which clients have used as a canvas to illustrate their journey and struggle as sexual assault survivors at this event. Along with the Denim display, there will be a screening of the documentary “Audrie and Daisy” and a discussion following. This event will be open to the public.
