Scammers looking to obtain personally identifying information
It has come to the attention of the Office of Victim Services (OVS) that some people have been getting phone calls, from persons identifying themselves as being from OVS Frauds Unit, asking for personally identifying information.
OVS does not have a Fraud Unit, nor would we reach out to individuals over the phone to request personally identifying information such as one’s social security number. If you have received such a call and provided your personal information, it is strongly suggested that you:
Alert law enforcement (even if you did not provide any information).
Check all your financial accounts for errors or suspicious activity.
Enroll in a credit monitoring service.
Place a fraud alert on your credit reports.
Consider freezing your credit.
